Deli / Retail Assistant

Location: Penzance, Cornwall, South West England

Job Type: Temporary, Full-Time

Salary: £13.50 per hour

This role involves working within a busy deli and retail environment, providing excellent customer service and supporting daily shop operations. The post holder serves customers, prepares and displays food items, maintains stock levels, and ensures that the shop is clean and welcoming at all times. The position requires a proactive and friendly individual who can work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

• Greet and assist customers in a polite and professional manner, responding to enquiries and providing product information.
• Prepare and serve deli products, including slicing meats and cheeses, arranging displays, and packaging items for sale.
• Operate the till and handle cash transactions accurately, processing payments and issuing receipts.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in accordance with food safety regulations and store policies.
• Restock shelves and replenish displays to ensure product availability and an attractive presentation.
• Monitor stock levels and assist with stock rotation to minimise waste and ensure freshness.
• Follow health and safety guidelines to maintain a safe working environment.
• Assist with unloading deliveries and organising stock in the storeroom as required.
• Support team members during busy periods and contribute to the smooth running of the store.

• Previous experience in retail or a customer-facing role is desirable but not essential.
• Experience handling food products and working in a food preparation environment is advantageous.

• Strong customer service skills with the ability to engage positively with a diverse range of customers.
• Basic cash handling and till operation skills.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
• Attention to detail, particularly relating to food preparation and presentation.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure during busy periods.
• Awareness of health and safety and food hygiene best practises.

• Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent.
• Previous experience in a deli or food retail environment.
• Familiarity with local produce and speciality food items.
